NOTICE: (Updated March 5, 2010)

Beginning December 19, 2009, Books 'N Border Collies will be posting but only intermittently while I pursue personal goals. I plan to share some reading I'm doing, but there will be no reviews. I will, however, be sharing my exploration of vegetarian cooking and the cookbooks and websites I use to educate myself. I hope you enjoy it!

The Downside of Audiobooks

So, I'm driving home from work yesterday. I pop that final CD for Portrait of an Unknown Woman into the player all excited to see how it ends. And . . . Nothing. Nothing at all. The CD is defective and won't play. I hate when that happens.

Man, that stinks. I'm not into audio books much, but I don't spend much time in my car, either. Maybe I'll try one the next time I go on a trip.

Oh my goodness!!! I can soooo relate! I think I'm the only one that tells librarians that a CD is defective. I think others just return it, then I get stuck with a dud. It's so frustrating! I hope you can get it somewhere else - and soon! :)

Just had the same thing happened to my MP3 and an audio book. Ruined my whole workout week. I've finally got the book downloaded (days later) and finished...but the whole experience has left deep wounds that will take months to heal.

Oh man! That sucks!

Oh yeh, that's maddening. Or when the blasted thing is scratched and just keeps skipping and skipping and you miss half the story. Errrrrrrrrrrrrrg-definitely doesn't happen with a book. lol.

Wow. I've never heard of that happening before! I just started using audio books too...

Bermudaonion ~ I listen to them in my car and all day at work. I love them!

Joy ~ I tell them, too. I'm glad to hear you also do. I people are afraid of getting blamed for it and having to pay for the book or something.

J. Kaye ~ It can really make a mess of some plans, that's for sure!

Amy ~ And I still had about half of my drive left, too! Grrrr.

Dar ~ The skipping thing is another pet peeve, for certain. I've been pretty lucky with the library ones and haven't had that happen too often. I actually happened more often with cassette tapes. There would be a broken one, or the tape obviously had been eaten by a recorder or two and was completely unintelligible.

Ladytink ~ This particular issue was a first time for me, too. Don't let it scare you off of them. I usually have great luck with CDs, even from the library. Just remember to wipe them off good before you play them. I've "fixed" a lot of skipping that way.

bummer!! I've tried audiobooks but I've found I just don't have the attention span. Too many crazy thoughts in my head distracting me!

I remember when I was listening to Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides on tape, the last side of the last tape got jammed. So frustrating! I ended up going to the library and sitting there for a while just reading those last pages!

I do love listening to audio books, but the downside is that you can't take a sneak peek at the ending! LOL!!

Andi ~ Most annoying.

Amy ~ Cool! I'm hoping to catch up with these next week.

Trish ~ That can happen, for sure. But my mind sometimes wonders while I'm reading books, too, so for me it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. :-)

Marge ~ I've had worse luck with tapes than CDs. And, yeah, those audiobooks do keep us honest, don't they? :-)

How frustrating. I took an audiobook back once to the library minus the last disc to my great embarassment when I found it still in the CD player. When I returned it the librarians were also embarassed as they hadn't noticed it was missing!

Have a great weekend.

Oh I figured out how to fix skipping from library DVDs before. Just add a couple of drops of saline solution and wipe clean. Works better than water for some reason!

Ladytink ~ Thanks for the tip! I will try to remember that next time I have a problem with one.
