NOTICE: (Updated March 5, 2010)

Beginning December 19, 2009, Books 'N Border Collies will be posting but only intermittently while I pursue personal goals. I plan to share some reading I'm doing, but there will be no reviews. I will, however, be sharing my exploration of vegetarian cooking and the cookbooks and websites I use to educate myself. I hope you enjoy it!

Help! I'm Purchasing Books and I Can't Stop!

After my confession about Harold Bloom being my secret hero, I started actively searching out some books in the various series he edits. One of those series is Bloom's Modern Critical Views, published by Chelsea House, which I believe currently consists of 82 Volumes, plus a number of others now out of print. I checked the volumes on Graham Greene and Richard Wright out of the library and decided I need to have these books. Shocking, I know. Unfortunately, these babies are about $45 each. Ouch. But thanks to third-party sellers on Amazon, I was able to get my hands on the Paul Auster and Vladimir Nabokov volumes for about $13 each! I'm in heaven! And I'm just getting started. I want the volumes on Cormac McCarthy, Philip Roth, Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, James Baldwin, Don Delillo . . . Shall I go on? :-) Suffice it to say I want them all. Good thing I truly enjoy Macaroni & Cheese, because that might be supper for the next year or so. LOL!

Hey, eating mac & cheese is definitely worth it if you can get some new books out of the deal.

ROFL, with that title I had to read this. Oh the things we do for books, lol. Enjoy your mac & cheese, cereal is a great dinner alternative too ;)

Bermuda Onion ~ I thought maybe I'd experiment with different brands and cheeses just so it looked like variety. :-)

Mel ~ You're right!! I've enjoyed Froot Loops for dinner more than once. Proper nutrition is overrated. :-)

Oooooh no! I'm not sure what to say. I have a little bit of mild disdain for Bloom after studying much of his criticism in my undergrad and grad school years. :P Glad you find him useful! Haha!

Trish ~ It's not *him* so much as all the reading and writing he has done. I find him difficult to read and understand most of the time, but I love the *idea* of all he's done. Does that make sense? The great part of these kinds of book is generally the only thing actually written by him is the introduction. :-)

LOL. Yes, that does make it much better. :)

And Paul Auster! SQUEEEEEE! Sorry, you know how I get. :)

Andi ~ Actually, I thought of you when I ordered it. :-) I hope it's as good as it looks! I'm just a little bummed because none of the essays discuss The Book of Illusions.

wow how fun!! I love Amazon Marketplace. I never buy from a real bookstore. Of course, I rarely buy from a cyber one either!

Maybe we can form a support group Lezlie, as I'm a bit out of control as well.

I just got 35++ books at a library booksale Satuday, and today when I went out to lunch with my daughter, we stoped at a "new to me" INDIE bookstore, and I paid $15.00/full price for Ragtime; Doctorow, since several of my enabler blogger friends loved it..LOL

Rebecca ~ I'm surprised at what you can get from the third party sellers! I'm super-fussy about the condition of my books, so I tend to buy new, but the new or like-new ones I've gotten from various sellers have been in beautiful shape for a fraction of the price.

Diane ~ Was it your post I saw with the huge acquisition from the library sale? Awesome! The problem with a support group is that then we would have to stop. Maybe we could start the kind of support group where we tell each other things like, "Hey! You got a *great* deal!" and "There are worse things to spend your money on." :-)

I've been avoiding the Bloom critical editions because I'm afraid I'll get hooked!

hee hee - I just sent off a ton of my books via book mooch and told my husband I was getting rid of books, reducing the pile, etc. Little does he know I've been REQUESTING just as many!

Rose City Reader ~ That is a very wise decision. But they're soooo good! I just ordered the Cormac McCarthy and Don Delillo volumes today. I've got it bad.

Care ~ I won't tell if you won't. :-) My hubby's been very understanding so far, but if I don't clear some of this out of here relatively soon I may start to get "the look".
