NOTICE: (Updated March 5, 2010)

Beginning December 19, 2009, Books 'N Border Collies will be posting but only intermittently while I pursue personal goals. I plan to share some reading I'm doing, but there will be no reviews. I will, however, be sharing my exploration of vegetarian cooking and the cookbooks and websites I use to educate myself. I hope you enjoy it!

THE QUEEN'S LADY

by Barbara Kyle

When Sir Thomas More's ward, Honor Larke, chooses to become a lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon rather than marry, she gets caught up in King Henry's "Great Matter" in ways she would have never dreamed possible. While King Henry tramples the laws of God and man in his desperation to divorce Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn, Honor uses her position and contacts at the religiously divided court to secretly save "heretics" from being burned at the stake. But what will she do when the accusing finger is inevitably pointed at her?

It is a great prize when a Tudor fiction junkie can find an exceptional book that looks beyond the famous figures of the times to the people who were simply trying to live their lives in the shadow of a selfish king's destructive behavior. The Queen's Lady digs into the heart of the religious turmoil taking place during Henry's reign and shows the reader a frightening world of greed, fanaticism, and intolerance and heroic deeds in defense of justice and reason. This is the kind of Tudor fiction that keeps us coming back to the well!

Lezlie, my shelves won't be able to hold all of these wonderful recommendations you keep giving me. lol. This one also sounds very, very good. I think at one point I'm going to have to take a month or so and treat myself to nothing but historical fiction. Thanks for a great review once again.

Dar & Zetor ~ This one is particularily good. I really liked that it didn't focus on Henry, Catherine, Anne, etc., as characaters, but showed consequences of their actions in the world around them.

As the author of this novel I loved your insightful comments, Lezlie. I wrote THE QUEEN'S LADY for readers just like you and your blog followers - people who love an exciting story about characters they can care about, but who want a little more too: a story with something deeper to say. I couldn't be happier that you enjoyed the book on all its levels.

BTW my publisher, Kensington Books, will publish the sequel, THE KING'S DAUGHTER, in 2009. It features the Wyatt Rebellion in the reign of Queen Mary (Henry VIII's daughter) and how Honor's daughter, Isabel, dangerously backs the rebels. I hope you and your readers will enjoy it too!

Dar ~ I know! It's so cool when they take the time to let us know our work means something to them, just like their's means something to us.

Teddy ~ This one is definitely worth making room on the TBR list. Her next one sounds like it will be great, too!
