NOTICE: (Updated March 5, 2010)

Beginning December 19, 2009, Books 'N Border Collies will be posting but only intermittently while I pursue personal goals. I plan to share some reading I'm doing, but there will be no reviews. I will, however, be sharing my exploration of vegetarian cooking and the cookbooks and websites I use to educate myself. I hope you enjoy it!

THE POST-AMERICAN WORLD

by Fareed Zakaria

This is a book not about the decline of America but rather about the rise of everyone else. It is about the great transformation taking place around the world, a transformation that, though often discussed, remains poorly understood.

-- The Post-American World, p. 1

Normally, a book about global economics would produce in me an empty, glassy-eyed stare rivaled only by our most vacuous entertainment icons. Quite frankly, I don't get it. But Fareed Zakaria makes it understandable without feeling like it's being dumbed down for you. The Post-American World was so absorbing that I would find myself continuing to sit in my car in the garage once I was home from work, listening the the CDs to learn more. With the economy being a huge issue in this presidential election and the mess on Wall Street this week, the information in this book became even more pertinent to me as a voter. I highly, highly recommend this book, and it should be required reading for anyone running for any governmental office. Just my personal opinion. :-)

Hi, Ramya! Zakaria really made the facts and figures accessible to people like us who are mystified by the details, but care about what is happening. I was fascinated by it!

This sounds very interesting! And timely. I'm with you on the glassy eyed stare. Just mention the words mutual funds or Roth IRA and I check out!

Wow, you're doing great on your 100 books to read! Room to spare. I'm at 70-something, I think I'll make it.

Terri ~ You're in luck! Not much mutual fund or IRA talk here. :-) Lots on the economic rise of China, India and others and America's potential position on the global stage as other countries come into their own. Very interesting!

And thanks on the 100+ Book Challenge! I've started to have visions of 150 for next year, but I'm not sure how realistic that is. You're at 70-something? You'll do it!!

Thanks for the recommend! I like learning and knowing about things in this area, but I too get the glassy eyes when trying to access it. This one sounds intriguing.

Sounds interesting to me, actually. America is a world power at the moment, but if there is anything history tells us, its that nothing stays the same. Great topic, and I find the writer to be an interesting person. I'll have to check it out!

Terri ~ No glassy eyes during this one. He really makes it interesting.

Kim ~ Very true! I agree about Mr. Zakaria. He has another book that I'm interested in reading also, but the title escapes me at the moment.

I'm afraid many of those in power or those seeking power don't read anything! I'm sure most everyone has seen the picture of Obama with this book in his hand. As a librarian and an American it did my heart good. I hope he was actually reading it and not just using it for the PR value.

Lisa ~ I also took heart at that photo. Perhaps I'm too optimistic, but I believe he was actually reading the book. Some of his speeches seem to reference many of the same ideologies Zakaria writes about.

Thanks for this great review - you've made me want to read this book. I'd like to be more knowledgeable about our world, and it's encouraging to hear that this book is both informative and accessible. I'd be interested to learn about other books you've enjoyed on similar subjects.

Charley ~ Books on subjects like this scare me, because I feel like I'm not going to get it. But, like you, I really want to learn more about the world. I'm going to try to find more like this one, so when I do I will definitely pass the information on here!
