NOTICE: (Updated March 5, 2010)

Beginning December 19, 2009, Books 'N Border Collies will be posting but only intermittently while I pursue personal goals. I plan to share some reading I'm doing, but there will be no reviews. I will, however, be sharing my exploration of vegetarian cooking and the cookbooks and websites I use to educate myself. I hope you enjoy it!

THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN

by Mark Twain

As usual when I read a classic of this caliber, there is not a single innovative thing I can say. It's all been dissected and studied more closely than I will ever attempt on these pages. I will say this, however: If you have not yet read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, you truly are missing out. Granted, the repeated use of the N-word was like nails down a chalkboard to me, but the book as a whole was enchanting, and the friendship that develops between Huck and Jim is too precious to treat lightly on a quick-review blog. It's easy to understand why Huck Finn is held in such high esteem.

Also, for those of you who love audiobooks as much as I do, I listened to both this and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer narrated by the most amazing actor, Norman Dietz. His vocal portrayals of all the characters was incredible! I highly, highly recommend his recordings of these books! I believe the versions from Recorded Books and sold at Borders under their logo are his readings. I can't say enough about how much enjoyment I got out of listening to him as Tom, Huck, Jim, and all the rest.

This is one of my top five novels, for sure! I still remember the spiders in the cabin quite vividly. Have you read Life on the Mississippi?

I haven't read this since senior year AP English! I loved it then and would love to reread it sometime.

I can't tell you the number of times I've meant to read this novel. One of these days...

This is one of those ones that has slipped away from me for one reason or another. I'm glad you liked it so much! Oh and happy late anniversary, I saw it is the same day as me :-)

Chartroose ~ The spiders were great! That whole section with them planning Jim's escape was just too funny! Jim was such a good sport about the whole thing. :-) I haven't read Life on the Mississippi, but rumor has it Mr. Dietz has recorded that one, too. I may have to go on the search. . .

Chain Reader ~ I didn't read it in high school like I was supposed to. I'm almost glad, because I think I appreciate it more now than I would have then.

Oh, Dar! You have to make time for it sometime. The audio version is a great way to go, too, if you're short on time. I think it's only $20 at Borders with the awesome narrator. He made it even better!

Kim ~ You did read it and didn't care for it? Or you haven't read it yet? If it's the former, I'm just curious what you didn't like. It's good hear both sides! (I thought it was cool that our anniversaries are on the same day. :-)
